Emory Winship Hospital Volunteer Requirements

Remember that when you apply, list SHC in your application, otherwise you may not receive the benefits of our partnership! Currently, the only change to the application is an additional training understanding the risks of COVID-19 and is required by all volunteers, both new and returning.
- You must be 18 or older
- You must commit to volunteering for 8 hours per month (about two 4-hour shifts) for at least 6 months
- You must complete and pass the volunteer application, interview, and background check.
- You must complete both the online and in-person orientations once accepted.
- You must provide proof of your vaccinations(MMR, Varicella, flu shot, COVID Vaccine, and TB test)
*TB test must be no older than 12months. Otherwise, a new TB test must be taken
*COVID Vaccine (at least 2 shots)
SHC REQUIREMENTS:
- You must complete at least 21 hours of volunteering each semester after your first semester on SHC. If you start volunteering at the middle of the semester AND this is not your first semester on SHC AND are worried you will not be able to make the 21 hours , please email SHC at [email protected].
- You must adhere to the hospital's policies and remain in your department.
- If you need to be absent from a shift, please inform you coordinator well in advance and follow their communication policies.
- Members who do not communicate adequately and complete their volunteer hours will be placed on the blacklist in subsequent semesters.
Step #1: Attend the SHC General Orientation & Fill out THE Online Membership Application
It is mandatory for all new members to attend the SHC General Orientation. The orientation will last approximately an hour and provide details about SHC and volunteering opportunities at WellStar's Atlanta Medical Center and Emory Winship Hospital/Proton Therapy Center. Then, you must fill out the SHC membership application posted on our home page, GT Engage page, and on social media (Facebook and Instagram).

- You must pay your dues.
- Submit your SHC waiver (found below).
- Sign up for the notion page and the membership portal.
Step #2: Fill out a Volunteer Application
Fill out the application below. This application is for volunteers who are 18 and over. You will need to write short paragraphs explaining why you want to volunteer at Emory, what volunteer experience you have already, and the skills that you have that would be useful when volunteering. You will also need a couple of references.

Step #3: Interview
After submitting your application, someone will reach out to you for an interview. All prospective volunteers will have to conduct an interview. Interview last around 15 minutes, and typically occur at the main Emory Hospital in Decatur. You will need to bring photo ID to your interview, and dress professionally.
Step #4 (Intermediate step): Required Tests
You will need a TB skin test conducted within a month of your volunteer start date. TB skin tests are offered for free by Emory for all employees (which will include you). You will also need a flu shot from the most recent season. You need to provide documentation of both the flu shot and the TB skin test. Ideally, you bring the documentation to your orientation, but both are required before you begin volunteering. Additionally, there are required vaccinations including Measles, Mumps, and Rubella vaccinations, as well as the COVID and Chicken Pox/Varicella vaccination. You will need to provide documentation of these vaccinations.
NOTE about the TB Skin Test: If you are in need of a TB test, the documentation that you will receive via email after your orientation, will give you directions to our Employee Health dept. at the Clifton Campus. Additionally, this will be a blood draw, so please make sure that you are properly hydrated. Once you have received your TB test, any documentation provided to you by the staff, will need to be submitted to the Winship Volunteer Services dept. ***It is imperative, that you bring the filled out documentation with you to get a TB test. Otherwise, they will not give it to you.

Step #5: Orientation
Once you have conducted your interview, someone will reach out to you about orientation. There will be two components to the orientation. First, there will be an online portion of the orientation that you will need to complete and that will have an examination at the end. Second, there will be an in person orientation. Typically orientation occurs on Saturdays, and occasionally orientation for SHC members is at Georgia Tech. Bring documentation of your TB skin test and flu shot to orientation if you have not already submitted them! Dress business casual for orientation, and be ready to sign additional forms as necessary!
STEP #6: GET YOUR BADGE AND VOLUNTEER JACKET
To volunteer at Emory, there will be two things that you need: First, you will need an Winship Volunteer Badge. To get your badge, you will take documents that you received, via email and after orientation, to
pick up your badge as instructed during orientation. You will need to go to the Clifton Campus Public Safety office to get your badge. You will need to bring the badge on your first day of volunteering. Second, you will need a volunteer jacket. Once you have secured your badge, please come to our offices, located in Bldg. C, 1st floor of the Clifton Campus. The deposit for the jacket is $25 (Credit/Debit card Only)

sTEP #7: sTART vOLUNTEERING
On your first day of volunteering, arrive early! Once you are there, your jacket will be brought to you, and you will be ready to go! Remember to bring your badge and wear it on the outside of your jacket at all times! Adhere to all dress code requirements, and have fun volunteering!
Note: There is a $25 deposit for the Emory jacket, and a $10 deposit for the Arts in Health shirt.
